Historical Description
CLECKHEATON is a large village and extensive township in the parish of Birstal, consisting of three hamlets, viz. Cleckheaton, Scholes, and Oakenshaw; it is 198 miles from London, 5 ½ south-south-east from Bradford, 6 ½ east from Halifax, and 9 south-west from Leeds; it is a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, in the petty sessional division of Bradford, North Bierley union, Bradford county court district, wapentake of Morley, rural deanery of Birstal, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company has a station here. The township is divided into three ecclesiastical parishes, Whitechapel, St. John’s, and St. Luke's. The ecclesiastical parish of Whitechapel was formed in 1847 and consists of the hamlets of Scholes and Oakenshaw, with part of the hamlet of Cleckheaton. The township is governed by a local board of 13 members. Cleckheaton chapel, an edifice of very ancient foundation, and still called by its venerable name of the Old White Chapel in the North. was rebuilt in 1706, repaired in 1782, enlarged in 1821, and again rebuilt in 1831, towards which the Incorporated Church Building society granted a sum of £450: it now consists of nave, with quasi-chancel and a turret with 1 bell: on the south wall is a Sun.-dial dated 1793, and above it a shield of arms, apparently a hunting horn between three roses, within a bordure engrailed: the east window, of three lights, is stained: there are monumental inscriptions in the chapel to Dr. Richard Richardson F.R.S. (1741), susannah Richard son (1710), John Richardson (1721), Captain Richard Richardson (1782), Richard Richardson of Burley esq. (1780) and Dorothy his wife (1798), William Richardson esq. of Ripon (1783), Paulina Muston (1821), John Brooke and Lydia his wife (1794), Rev. John Eastwood D.D. formerly curate (1772), Benjamin Wright (1874) and Martha his wife (1868), Samuel Sharpe (1857) and Martha his wife (1848), Rev. George Winter, of Moorlands Field, Appleby, 20 years curate of Cleckheaton (1836), and to Joseph Ogden, 25 years minister (1816). In the churchyard is a granite monument to Charles Taylor esq. of Oakenshaw (1877), and a very ancient yew tree. The register dates from the year 1760. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £200, without residence, in the gift of Sir Mathew Wilson, bart. M.P. of Eshton Hall, and held by the Rev. Robert Fetzer Taylor M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, instituted in 1837. The ecclesiastical parish of St. John was formed in 1812 and consists of the village of Cleckheaton, together with a small portion of each of the townships of Liversedge and Gomersal. The church, erected by Her Majesty’s Commissioners in 1830, at a cost of £2,700, consecrated in 1832, and enlarged at a cost of £1,500 in 1864, consists of a chancel, in the Geometric style, added in 1864 to the nave and tower, of a much earlier and quite unpretending character. The register dates from the year 1832. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Birstal, and held by the Rev. John Abdiel Seaton M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford, who was appointed in 1877. The church of SS. Philip and James was erected at Scholes at a cost of about £5,000, and is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and tower. St. Luke’s is an ecclesiastical parish formed in 1878 from the parishes of Whitechapel, Christ Church, Liversedge and St. John, Cleckheaton; the church, at Moor Bottom, is a temporary structure of iron. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value £150, in the gift of Mrs. Catherine Woodhead, Samuel Holdsworth stocks esq. George Jackson esq. Edward Brooke esq. and John Henry Leather esq. the former to have the first presentation; it is held by the Rev. Alfred Winnifrith. of St. Alban Hall, Oxford. The Congregational chapel, in Providence place, was erected at a cost of about £9,000, in 1857: there are also chapels for Wesleyans and Wesleyan Reformers. The Free Methodist chapel, Greenside, erected at a cost of £13,000, including site, is a building in the Classic style, freely treated, and has sittings for 1,700 persons. The cemetery, enclosed in 1853, Is situated at Whitcliffe, and the Local Board are now in treaty with the Low Moor Company for the purchase of land in Chapel lane, for a burial ground. Two fairs are held here for the sale of cattle; on Easter Monday and on the last Thursday in August. Extensive gas-works, erected in 1836, and standing in the adjoining township of Liversedge, have been purchased from a public company by the Cleckheaton Local Board. The town is well supplied with water.
The manufactures consist of woollen cloths, flannels, blankets, chemicals, wire, card, and the machinery required for the use of these trades; the vicinity abounds with coal mines. Cleckheaton is the Bite of a Roman station, and many coins and antiquities have been found. Sir Mathew Wilson bart. M.P. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The population of the township in 1861 was 6,231; 1871, 8,138; area, 1,652 acres; rateable value, £35.457.
