The church of St. Oswald is an ancient building of stone, partly Norman and partly Perpendicular in style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, and tower containing a clock and 3 bells, dated respectively 1650, 1679 & 1731: the whole of the windows in this church are stained, the east window being a memorial by the present vicar to his father, the Rev. Henry Arthur Beckwith. late vicar of Collingham, and Mary, his wife; the south window was a gift to the church on its restoration in 1870, and in the aisle are two lancet windows commemorating Joseph Benyon, of Boston spa (1871), and the Rev. B. Eamson Clerk M.A. twenty-eight years vicar of this parish (1867); and a third in the south wall of the chancel, to Ann, his wife (1860); the north wall contains four windows, three of which are memorials respectively to Edith Hand Gunter (1849); Robert Gunter and Fanny, his wife (1835—52); and Ann Gunter and Caroline, her sister (1861—66); a small window being placed over the north door to the memory of James Gunter (1879): the church also contains monumental tablets with Latin inscriptions, to the Beilby and Micklethwaite families, dating from 1658, and under the tower two venerable stones of the Runic and Saxon periods, whose history is unknown: on the south wall of the chancel remains a brass, undated, bearing an inscribed injunction to the incumbent, and erected by the Right Hon. Lady Elizabeth Hastings: the main portion of the church was restored in 1841 at a cost of £700, and in 1870 £600 was expended in providing a new roof for the chancel, reseating the church, and making other repairs. The register dates from the year 1579 and is in very fair condition. The living is a discharged vicarage, yearly value £400 with residence, in the gift of Charles Wheler esq. and held by the Rev. George Langton Beckwith M.A. of All souls College, Oxford. The Wesleyans have a small chapel here. Dawson’s charity amounts to £33 yearly.
