Historical Description

Conisborough, a large and very fine village, remarkable for its ancient castle upon a rocky eminence on the south side of the Don. In the church, an ancient structure, many of the Bosville family are interred. The ground plot of the castle is rather of an oval form, about 700 feet in circuit, nearly surrounded by a fosse forty feet deep, now full of large ash and elm trees. The lower part of most of the outward wall, and several rounders by which it was strengthened, still remain; the strong tower, or keep, which is 78 feet in height, is still entire; but when this castle was built, or when it began to fall to decay, is not known, and the tradition concerning it is too vague for belief. It seems most probable to have been built by William, first Earl of Warren, to whom this estate was given by the Conqueror. Richard de Conisborough, another of its possessors, and Earl of Cambridge, received his name from being born here.

At the inn kept here by Mr. Whaley, the following account of a feast is framed and hung up in a room, and which is copied by many tourists, as a notable instance of the change of times and circumstances in regard to the value of money: "The expenses of Ralph de Beeston and Sir Simon de Baldriston, at Conisborough, on Monday, the Morrow of the Holy Cross, in the 14 year of King Edward, the son of Edward II. In bread 1s. 6d.; in four gallons of wine 23.; in twelve gallons of ale bought at Doncaster, 1s. 6d.; in sixteen gallons of ale bought at Conisborough, 1s. 4d.; in shambles meat bought, 2s.; in eight fowls 1s.; in two geese 8d.; in eggs 3d.; in two pounds of candles 3 ½d.; in a woman’s wages for fetching the ale, 1d.; in provender for the horses, 1s. 3d." Cusworth-hall, about two miles nearly west from Doncaster, is an elegant mansion, and one of the finest situations in this part of the kingdom. Within the mansion is a small but elegant chapel, and over the communion-table a fine picture of the Good Samaritan.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CONISBROUGH is a parish with station on the south Yorkshire railway, 5 ¼ miles south-west from Doncaster, 7 north-east from Rotherham and 12 north-east from Sheffield; it is a polling place, for the southern division of the Riding, in the south division of the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, union, county court district and rural deanery of Doncaster, diocese and archdeaconry of York; the river Don separates it from Sprotborough parish. The church of St. Peter is a Norman edifice, with additions in the Early Decorated style: is consists of chancel, nave, aisles and tower with 3 bells, the small bell bearing date 1774: the interior was restored in 1866—7: this church has two piscinae and an old carved stone font; there are also five handsome stained windows, a brass to the memory of Geo. Woadyeare (1710), and one to Maria Toffill (1755). The register dates from the year 1558, and is in very good condition. The living is a discharged vicarage, gross yearly value £380 with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held by the Rev. John George Wood of Kings College, London. There is a Church of England Sunday school, the gift of the Rev. J. F. W. Woodyeare, and others maintained by the Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists, both denominations having a chapel. The charities are of £34 yearly value. There are two old established breweries and malting establishments; a very extensive one belonging to Messrs. Nicholson Brothers, known as Holywell Brewery, and one belonging to Mr. Ogley, at Hill Top. Messrs. Booth have works for the manufacture of sickles, hooks and scythes; they are also wood sawyers, and turners for brush manufacturers. There is an extensive, brick, tile, and sanitary pipe yard, in the occupation of the exors. of Mr. Simpson, who also have a similar establishment at Mexborough. Kilner Brothers have a large establishment for the manufacture of glass bottles. At Crookhill is a stone quarry, the property of the trustees of the Rev. Mr. Woodyeare, from which the stones were supplied for the pillars of the church at Doncaster; these stones are composed of magnesian limestone.

Conisbrough is celebrated for the ruins of its ancient Saxon cattle, which stand on a conical hill rising abruptly from the river Don, at the east end of the village; it forms one of the principal scenes in Sir Walter Scott’s romance of Ivanhoe, and here Richard, Earl of Cambridge, second son of the Duke of York, and grandson of Edward III. is said to have been born; these ruins consist of the lofty shell of a large and strong tower, which commands an extensive prospect of the fertile vale of the Don; it was once an impregnable fortress occupying the whole crown of the eminence, having the river Don on the north, and a deep ravine between it and the village, from which it was approached by a drawbridge over the moat, now filled up; this castle is first mentioned as belonging to Hengist, the Saxon leader, who was defeated here in 487, and again in 489, when he was taken prisoner and beheaded in the fortress: some, however, suppose that the ruins are the remains of a castle erected by Earl de Warrenne, to whom William the Conqueror gave the manor, Crookhill Hall, the seat of Mrs. Woodyeare, is pleasantly situated on rising ground, about a mile to the south. Lord Conyers is lord of the manor; and Andrew Montagu esq. the trustees of the Rev. J. F. W. Woodyeare, Mr. Bosville Milward, Francis Ogley, W. B. Wrightson, Godfrey Walker and trustees of T. H. Simpson esqrs. are chief landowners. The soil is clayey, dandy and limey; the subsoil is clay and limestone. The chief crops are turnips, clover, barley, wheat and oats. The area is 4,376 acres; rateable value £13,952; the population in 1861 was 1,655; 1871, 2,119.

Conisbrough Parks, 2 miles south; Butterbusk, 2 miles north-east: Flanderwell, 4 miles; Firsby, 3 miles south-west; and Woodlaiths, 4 miles, are places here.
