Historical Description

COPMANTHORPE is a township and ecclesiastical parish formed in 1866 from a detached portion of St. Mary Bishophill Junior, York, in the Northern division of the Riding, but being in Ainsty wapentake, is for parliamentary purposes included in the North Riding, York union and county court district, Bishopthorpe rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of York; it has a station on the North Eastern railway, 187 miles from London, 4 south-west from York and 30 ¾ from Doncaster. About a mile from the village anciently stood a preceptory of Knights Templars, of which a few curious remains are still to be seen in the walls and gardens of the parishioners. The church, probably that of the Templars, is a small but interesting Norman building of the eleventh century, consisting of quasi chancel and nave, with a bell-cot containing 2 bells. The register dates from the year 1602, and is in fair condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £248 with an excellent new vicarage house; it is in the gift of the vicar of St. Mary Bishophill Junior and held by the Rev. Edward Healy B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here are two small chapels, the Free Methodist and Wesleyan. F. H. Wood esq. is lord of the manor; there are many small landowners. The soil is good wheat land; subsoil clay and gravel. The crops are of the usual kind. The area is 1,656 acres; rateable value, £5,263; and the population in 1871, 327.

Church of England National school, Thomas Hudson, master.
