Historical Description

Coverham or Corham, where there was formerly an abbey of Premonstratensian canons, founded by Radulph, son of the Earl of Richmond, about the middle of the thirteenth century. The ruins of the abbey are scattered about in Coverdale, so called from the river, in a spot dreary and uncomfortable: a house has been built of the materials, and most of the neighbouring cottages appear decorated with spoils from this or some other religious house.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

COVERHAM is a parish and township on the north bank of the river Cover, 1 mile south-west from Middleham and 3 south from Leyburn station on the Northallerton and Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of West Hang, union and county court district of Leyburn, rural deanery of Catterick West, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of the Holy Trinity is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the chancel was rebuilt in 1854, and there are several stained windows: the church was reseated and restored in 1878, at a cost of 2,350, and has 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1662. The living is a vicarage, with Horsehouse annexed, joint net yearly value £250, including 112 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lupton Topham esq. and held since 1892 by the Rev. Edwin Hutton-Hall M.A. of Merton College, Oxford, who resides at Carlton. The charities of the whole parish are of 50 yearly value. Coverham Abbey, a house of the Premonstratensian Order, first founded at Swainby, temp. Hen. II. by Halewisa de Glanville, was removed here 14 John (1212—13) by Ralph de Glanville, son of Robert, lord of Middleham, in 1213, and dedicated to St. Mary; at the Dissolution there were 20 canons, and revenues estimated at £140: the church was destroyed in 1321 by the scots, but three bays of the Decorated nave, and the gatehouse, are still standing, and two effigies also remain. The house now called Coverham Abbey, the residence of Mrs. A. A. Wright, with many of the out-buildings, has been partly built out of the remains of the ancient abbey; two rooms of the abbey have been restored by Mrs. A. A. Wright, and several tombstones, in a fine state of preservation, have been discovered, the latest in 1900. Lupton T. Topham esq. of Lutterworth, Leics. and Middleham is lord of the manor; Frank Brown esq. of Norton, Stockton-on-Tees, Mrs. A. A. Wright, of Coverham Abbey, and William Robinson Burrill-Robinson esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is rocky, and abounds with limestone. Here are a coal mine and a slate and flag quarry. The land is principally in pasture. The area of Agglethorpe with Coverham township is 1,397 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £2,080; the population in 1911 was 128 in the township and 722 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Agglethorpe is about 1 ½ miles west from the church.
