Historical Description
Coxwold is one mile from Byland, where the traveller may see Newburgh-hall, the seat of Thomas Edward Winn Bellasyse, esq. of the honourable family of the Lords Fauconberg.
COXWOLD is a parish and village, with a station on the Thirsk and Malton branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 6 miles north from Easingwold, 8 ½ southeast from Thirsk and 7 ½ south-east from Helmsley, in the Thirsk and Malton vision of the Riding, Birdforth wapentake and petty sessional division, Easingwold union and county court district, rural deanery of Easingwold, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Michael, standing on an eminence at the top of the sloping village street, is an interesting edifice in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a fine octagonal western tower, with clock, containing 3 bells: the tower is lighted in the upper stage by open traceried windows, and has angle buttresses, rising into crocketed pinnacles, above an open parapet: the rest of the church has also open embattled parapets with similar pinnacles, and there is a good deal of ancient stained glass: the chancel was rebuilt in the year 1777, and in it are the replaced monuments of the family of Belasvse, barons, viscounts and earls of Fauconberg; the most ancient of these is an altar tomb to Sir William Belasyse kt. ob. April 13, 1603, which has recumbent figures of himself and Margaret (Fairfax), his wife, both with hands lifted in prayer: on the north side is an elegant monument, in pure white marble, to Thomas Belasyse, 2nd viscount and 1st earl of Fauconberg, ob. December 31, 1700, and another to Sir Thomas Belasyse, 1st viscount, ob. 1652: on the south wall is a monument to Rear-Admiral Lord Adolphus Fitz-Clarence, third son of William IV. who died whilst on a visit to Newburgh Priory, 17 May, 1856: the stained east window was erected by Sir George Orby Wombwell bart. in memory of his eldest son, George Wombwell, of the Kings Royal Rifles, who died at Meerut, in India, 18th January, 1889, and there are others erected in 1902 to two sons of Sir George Wombwell, the younger of whom, Stephen Wombwell, died during the south African war: the church affords 280 sittings. The register dates from the year 1583. A lych gate was erected in 1902 by Sir George and Lady Wombwell, as a memorial to their son Stephen, above mentioned. The living is a vicarage with Yearsley annexed, net yearly value £219, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Ernest Hedger M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford; the tithes (amounting to about £1,100) belong to Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built about 1871. A Free Grammar school was founded here in 1603, by Sir John Hart, a native of Coxwold and lord mayor of London in 1590, when he was knighted; but the school is now extinct. The charities here are valuable: the poor have from various sources upwards of £44 yearly, and there is a hospital for 10 old men, founded in 1662 by Thomas, Earl of Fauconberg, and endowed with a rent-charge of 59. The hospital building, on the south side of the village street, is entered by a picturesque gabled porch of two storeys, with a small square turret on the roof, containing a bell; and over the doorway are the arms and crest of the founder. At the entrance to the village from the west stands shandy Hall, formerly the residence of the facetious Laurence Sterne M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge, who was vicar of this parish from 1760 till his death, which occurred in London, March 18, 1768; he had previously been for 20 years vicar of Sutton, and held at the same time the vicarage of Stillington, together with a prebend in York Cathedral; the house is a picturesque structure of brick, with gabled wings, and a singular and very massive chimney stack at the east end: over the entrance is a stone tablet, placed in 1880, by Sir George O. Wombwell bart. and bearing the following inscription:-“Shandy Hall: Here dwelt Laurence Sterne, many years incumbent of Coxwold. Here ha wrote ' Tristram shandy ’ and the ‘ sentimental Journey.’ Died in London in 1768, aged 55 years”: the two first volumes of “Tristram shandy” were originally published at York in 1759, and the remainder in London from 1761 to 1767; the “Sentimental Journey” was published in London in 1768, shortly before his decease; he also published some volumes of sermons, but his greatest work is undoubtedly his “Tristram shandy”; Sterne was buried in the cemetery belonging to St. George’s, Hanover square, London. In the centre of the village, opposite the “Fauconberg Arms,” is a fine old elm tree. Sir George Orby Wombwell bart. of Newburgh Priory, is lord of the manor and owner of the land. The soil is loamy, and the subsoil a gravelly clay, and produces good crops of wheat, oats, barley and pasture. The area of the township is 1,375 acres; rateable value, £2,210; the population in 1911 was 294 in the township, and 917 in the ecclesiastical parish.
DEER PARK is three-quarters of a mile south-east.
Sir G. O. Wombwell’s school, erected in 1863, for 120 children; average attendance, 83.
CAMSHEAD, 2 miles north from Coxwold; HIGH WOODS, 2 ½ miles north-east, are places here.
Sir George O. Wombwell's school (mixed), built about 1840, for 60 children; average attendance, 13.
