Historical Description

CRAMBE is a parish and township in the vale of Derwent, on the border of the East Riding, 2 ½ miles east from the Barton Hill station on the York and Scarborough branch of the North Eastern railway, 6 ½ southwest from Malton and 12 north-east from York, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, petty sessional division of Bulmer East, Malton union and county court district, rural deanery of Bulmer, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone in the Norman and Early English styles, and consists of chancel, nave and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to Col. Cholmley, and there is another to Richard Potter esq.: there are memorial tablets to the Cholmley, Haigh, Garforth and Clough-Taylor families, and a brass to Selina, Viscountess Milton, d. 24 sept. 1893: the chancel arch is probably Saxon, the pulpit is Jacobean and the font Early English: the church was partially restored in 1887 at a cost of 698, and again in 1894—5, when the western half of the nave was reseated, new doors provided and a new altar erected: an altar frontal and other decorations were presented by Mrs. S. Ricketts: the church affords 130 sittings. The register dates from the year 1711. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value 265, including 37 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Richard Ernest Ricketts M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford. The trustees of the Cholmley estates are lords of the manor and chief landowners. The land is mostly in pasture. The area of the township is 1,153 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £3,796; the population in 1911 was township, 104, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 313.

The children here attend Whitwell school, the old school at Crambe being now used only for Sunday school purposes, parish meetings & entertainments.
