Historical Description

CROFT is a township and parish on the south bank of the river Tees, which forms the northern boundary of the county, with a station (Croft spa) on the main line of the North Eastern railway, and is 3 miles south from Darlington, 10 north-east from Richmond and 232 ½ from London. Croft parish comprises the townships of Croft, Dalton, Halnaby, and a part of Stapleton; the one last named will be found under the heading of Barton; it is in the Richmond division of the Riding, East Gilling wapentake and petty sessional division, union and county court district of Darlington, rural deanery of East Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The Tees is here crossed by a bridge connecting this place with the parish of Hurworth in Durham. The Great North road passes through the parish. The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a tower containing 3 bells: it was restored in 1878 at a cost of £3,000: the chancel retains a sedile and a piscina, and there is a gallery on the north side: the fittings are irregular and various in style and of considerable antiquity: in the north aisle is a marble tomb: the south aisle, which has descended, with the manor, from the Clervaux to the Chaytor family, contains an altar tomb of grey marble to Sir Richard Clervaux kt. a former lord of Croft, knighted at Croft 9th Aug. 1487 by King Henry VII. and related in blood, as appears from the inscription, to Edward IV. and Richard III. and esquire of the body to Henry VI.; he died in 1490: the church was partially restored in 1900, at a cost of over 800, when the chancel was re-floored, panelled in oak, and fitted with choir stalls; it was again restored in 1912 at a cost of £700, when the nave was reseated: the carved oak reredos was presented by the late Sir William Henry E. Chaytor bart. D.L., J.P. and his family, and the panelling on either side by the late Dowager Duchess of Northumberland; and various other gifts were made by Miss Easton, of Layton Manor, A. Heathcote Long esq. and Miss A. E. Marshall: the church affords 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1618. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £520, including 23 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1894 by the Rev. James McCall Marshall M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, ad eundem M.A. Durham, and surrogate. The charities are 10s. yearly, left by Thomas Barker; a share in Dame Calverley’s charity, and also the interest of £160, left by Sir Mark Milbanke.

There are mineral springs here, resembling both in smell and medicinal properties, and in some degree superior to the celebrated Harrogate water. A careful analysis of the different springs was made in May, 1874. by W. Chisholm M.D. of Hurworth-upon-Tees, and it was then found that three were sulphureous saline springs, and the fourth of a saline character only; attached are several bath rooms, which are well fitted up.

The “New Well” water contains 221.13 grains of saline matter dissolved in the imperial gallon, consisting principally of carbonate of magnesia, sulphate of magnesia, sulphate of soda, carbonate of lime, sulphate of lime, and chloride of sodium, and is highly impregnated with sulphuretted hydrogen, there being fully 20 cubic inches of the sulphur gas dissolved in the gallon, and it is therefore entitled to rank in the highest class of sulphureous or hepatic waters, and will be eminently serviceable in all ailments for which waters of this character are specially recommended. The “Old Well” and “Canny Well” waters contain respectively 187.04 grains of saline compounds dissolved in the imperial gallon, accompanied by an average amount of sulphuretted hydrogen. These waters are therefore of medium strength in sulphureous properties, and will be found highly beneficial wherever a mild sulphureous saline water is required. The “sweet Well” water yields 153.92 grains of saline matter from the imperial gallon, and is of excellent quality as a mild saline water. These waters are recommended in the treatment of all disorders where such waters have been found to be eminently successful and serviceable, either when taken as a beverage or when employed in a bath-as in the following diseases: diseases of the liver, rheumatic or gouty affections, diseases of the kidneys and bladder, in many skin and other complaints.
