Historical Description

CROFTON is a parish and pleasant village and station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 3 ½ miles southeast from Wakefield, in the southern division of the Riding, lower division of Agbrigg wapentake, Wakefield union and county court district, rural deanery of Pontefract and archdeaconry and diocese of York. The church of All saints is a cruciform stone building in the Later English style, consisting of chance], nave, transepts, and a tower containing a clock and 3 bells, of which the large bell is inscribed “Venite, A.D. 1663;” the 2nd: “In God is al, quoth Gabriel;” the 3rd: “Ave Maria gracia plena; ’’ the 2nd bell is supposed, from the similarity of the inscription, to have come from the same foundry as one of the bells at Rylstone: there are monuments to Sir Henry Wilson and the families of Mason and Meyer: this church was originally in the Ings, but was re-built on the top of the hill by Bishop Flemming about 1430: he was born at Crofton, and was afterwards Bishop of Lincoln and founder of Lincoln College, Oxford. The register dates from the year 1615, and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £334 (tithes commuted at £286), with residence and 55 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and held by the Rev. Josiah Samuel Moore M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Shillito and Mason’s Charity, being the interest of £100, and Mrs. Tew’s, the interest of £100, are yearly distributed among the widows residing in the parish, and an annual dole to the poor of £2 10s. is paid by the owner of a field on which the original bequest of £50 was secured. Crofton Old Hall, the seat of William Hurst esq. is a modern brick building situated on an eminence, commanding extensive views. Croflon Grange is the residence of Nowell L. Fernandes esq. H. L. S. Wilson esq. who is lord of the manor, the Earl of Westmorland, William Hurst esq. and the rector are chief landowners. The soil is clay and loam; the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, potatoes and beans. The population was (1871) 492, and the area is 1,520 acres; rateable value £4,666.

Board school, erected in 1878, is a building of red brick, with stone facings, and includes a master’s house; John Glaister, master.
