Historical Description

CUMBERWORTH. situated on a hill, is a township and scattered village in the southern division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Huddersfield, union of Huddersfield and Holmfirth county court distrier, upper division of the wapentake of Agbrigg, rural deanery of Silkstone, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, 10 miles north-west from Barnsley, 5 north-west from Penistone, 1 west from Denby Dale station and 11 from Wakefield. The church of St. Nicholas, an ancient Norman stone building, with nave, square embattled tower and 3 bells, has been, with the exception of the tower, entirely rebuilt, at a cost of £1,600, chiefly defrayed by private subscription: the east window is a memorial to Mr. and Mrs. Seth senior, erected by their family; the church has now 250 sittings, all of which are free. The register cates from the year 1690, and is in good condition. The living was formerly a donative, but is now a rectory, yearly value £150, in the gift of W. B. Beaumont esq. M.P. and held by the Rev. John Phillips Dickson B.A. Trinity College, Dublin. There is a chapel for the Primitive Methodists at Lower Cumberworth. The Reformed Methodists have a chapel. Here are woollen manufactories and collieries. W. B. Beaumont esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Sir J. Perceival Radcliffe hart. William Hirst esq. Walter Norton esq. J.P. and Mr. Thomas Armitage and Mr. James Wood. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The population of the township in 1871 was 2,485, of the ecclesiastical parish 857, and the area is 1,392 acres; rateable value £3,654.

Cumberworth Half, a township annexed to Cumberworth. has been divided, and now forms a part of the villages of Cumberworth and Skelmanthorpe. Denby Dale, partly in Cumberworth. is given with Denby.
