Historical Description

CUNDALL is a parish comprising the townships of Cundall-with-Leckby, Fawdington, and Norton-le-Clay, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, county court district of Ripon, rural deanery of Boroughbridge and archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon.

CUNDALL-WITH-LECKBY township is in Ripon union, and Hallikeld wapentake and petty sessional division. The village of Cundall is bounded on the north by the river Swale, 2 miles north-west from Brafferton station on the Boroughbridge and Knaresborough branch of the North Eastern railway, 8 east from Ripon, 4 ¾ north from Boroughbridge, 7 south-west from Thirsk and 18 northwest from York. The church of St. Mary and All Saints, erected in 1852 on the site of an older structure, is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, north porch and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 3 bells: there are memorial windows to the late Rev. T. Horsfall, a former vicar, and his eldest son, and another erected in 1903 to the Rev. James Murdoch Pollock LL.D., Ph.D. vicar here 1886—1900: the church affords 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1582. The living is a vicarage, with Norton-le-Clay annexed, joint net yearly value £152, including 7 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Furness, and held since 1907 by the Rev. Joseph John Merry. A charity of £20 a year is distributed in coals to the poor; and there is also Leadley’s charity of £3, £1 for Cundall and £2 for Norton-le-Clay. Cundall Manor is the residence of Lord Furness, lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is gravelly; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are turnips, barley, wheat, with some land in pasture. The area of the township is 2,033 acres of land and 19 of water; rateable value, £2,378; the population in 1911 was, township, 156, and ecclesiastical parish, 287.
