Historical Description

DANBY is a parish (formerly including Glaisdale township): the small river Esk runs through from west to east, dividing it into two unequal portions, the larger of which lies to the south of the stream: it is a station on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 10 miles south-east from Guisborough, 14 west from Whitby and 13 east from Stokesley, in the Whitby division of the Hiding, Gulsborcugh union, east division of Langbaurgh liberty, petty sessional division of Langbaurgh East, county court district of Whitby, rural deanery of Stokesley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Hilda, an edifice of stone, and probably at first a Norman structure, consists of chancel, nave and an embattled tower, on the south side, containing 3 bells: the base of the tower forms the entrance: the ancient Early English chancel, which existed in a nearly ruinous condition up to 1848, was then rebuilt by the late Viscount Downe, the nave had been rebuilt by the parish about the year 1789; the tower was added in the 15th century: there are about 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1583. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, including g acres of glebe, with a handsome residence, built by the patron about 1850, in the gift of Viscount Downe, and held since 1900 by the Rev. George Bird M.A. and L.th, of Durham University. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. There are charities of about 22 yearly. Danby Lodge is a shooting box belonging to Viscount Downe K.C.V.O., C.B., C.I.E. who is lord of the manor and chief landowner. Danby Castle, in Little Fryup, on the northern slope of the moorland hills, to the south of the Esk, and now in the occupation of Mr. John Dowson, farmer, was founded by William le Latimer, jun. probably about 1308; the buildings originally surrounded a court yard, with a square, but not lofty tower at each angle, but about 1600 the south-east and south-west angular projections were greatly enlarged; the existing remains, including a curious undercroft with ribbed vaulting, are worth inspection. Up to the time of the foundation and erection of this castle, the baronial residence had been at Castleton, on the site now occupied by the farmhouse known as “Castle Hills.” in the parish are numerous scattered farms, the average size being considerably under 100 acres, and some of the farmhouses bear ancient names, such as Wedland Head, Kadeland House, Butterwhitts, Clitherbecks, Didderhowe and Foresters’ Lodge. The residence called Church House stands on the site of an ancient grange or farm building connected with lands once belonging to Guisborough Priory, and for many years after the Dissolution was known as Canon Hall. The different portions of the dale are distinguished by different names: thus, the commencement of the valley at its Southern end is called Danby Head; the other end, or embouchure into the Esk Valley, is Danby End; in the vicinity of the church the name Danby prevails; at an imaginary line drawn east and west across the dale, nearly three-quarters of a mile south of the church, Danby Bottom begins, and joins on, still more to the south, to Danby Head; the eastern side of the Dale is Dale side; the western, Danby West side. There are collieries of inferior coal in the parish, with seams from 16 to 18 inches thick, but they have not been worked for a number of years: at the Commondale shaft ironstone was found at the depth of 113 yards. The accumulations of ancient slag, some of them of enormous extent, which exist in different parts of the parish, are very curious, and it is now an ascertained fact thas many of these accumulations are due to the furnaces, some of which were retained in the hands of the lords of the fee, and others kept in operation by the canons of Guisbro’, to whom large grants of mining privileges were made by the different lords of the Brus family, together with the right to make charcoal from the wood of the district; the farm called Furnace farm perpetuates the record of one of these sites. The soil is of the most varied description, the subsoil equally so; clay, sand and peat are frequently found in the same field. The chief products are cheese, bacon, oats, barley, turnips and potatoes. The population of Danby (exclusive of Glaisdale), and including Castleton, Danby End, Little Fryup and Ainthorpe in 1911 was 1,164; the area in the parish is 12,492 acres, of which about 7,300 are inclosed and cultivated; rateable value of Danby, including Castleton, £9,931.

Public Elementary schools

The schools are controlled by a committee of six, formed in 1903; Rev. George Bird M.A., chairman & correspondent.

Danby (mixed), erected solely at the expense of the late Viscount Downe & exclusively supported by the present Viscount; the school will hold 115 children; average attendance, 71.

Great Fryup (mixed), erected 1877, for 54 children; average attendance, 37.
