Historical Description

DARFIELD is a parish, township and station on the Midland railway, 5 miles east from Barnsley, and 10 west from Doncaster, in the southern division of the Riding, north division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, Barnsley union, petty sessional division, and county court district, Wath rural deanery, York archdeaconry and diocese, situated on the Dearne stream. The church of All saints is an ancient stone building in the Early English style, repaired and embellished in 1849 at a cost of £2,000, and consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, an ancient porch, and a massive tower containing 6 fine-toned bells, the tenor being dated 1615, and weighing 19cwt. 3grs. without the clapper: the east window, as well as the upper portion of all the other windows, is stained: the church has also a font and an organ: there are twenty very fine monuments in the church, and one in the churchyard, in commemoration of the Lundhill colliery explosion, February 19th. 1857, when 189 men and boys lost their lives. The register dates from the year 1600, and is in very good condition. The living is in two medieties; the first mediety, which is a rectory, is worth £1,500 yearly with residence, in the gift of and held by the Rev. Henry Pennant Cooke M.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge; the second mediety is a vicarage and impropriation belonging to Trinity College, Cambridge, the tithes of which are commuted at £1,250; the college appoint the vicar, with an income of £220 and residence; the Rev. Frederick Sleap M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, is the vicar. Here are almshouses for four poor widows, with a small endowment; also charities of £35 yearly value. Darfield Main Colliery is in this township. The principal landowners are the Rev, H. B. Cooke, Frank H. Taylor esq. who is lord of the manor, and C. B. E. Wright esq. The soil is light and sandy; subsoil is gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and potatoes. The population of the parish in 1861 was 12,321; 1871, 15,379; and the area is 14,086 acres; the population of the township in 1871 was 1,673, with an area of 2,017 acres; rateable value £11,155 16s.
