Stapleton History

Stapleton is a township in the parish of Darrington, from 4 to 5 miles south-east from Pontefract, and consists of three farms, and Stapleton Park, the seat of Mrs. Hope Barton, which is a beautiful mansion of stone, standing in a well-wooded park of 500 acres; the principal front is ornamented with four lofty Ionic columns. The trustees of the late H. E. Hope Barton esq. are lords of the manor and sole landowners. The population in 1871 was 114, and the area is 1,633 acres; rateable value £1,423.
