Historical Description

Darton, three miles and a half before we reach Barnsley, is a populous village, with a handsome church; the parish abounds with coal and timber.

DARTON is a parish and village and station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 3 miles north-west from Barnsley, 8 south-west from Wakefield, and 12 ½ east-south-east from Huddersfield, situated on the river Dearne, in the southern division of the Riding, Staincross wapentake, Barnsley union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Silkstone, archdeaconry of Craven, diocese of Ripon, and includes the townships of Darton, Barugh and Kexborough. The parish is governed by a Local Board of Health of 12 members. The church of All saints is a spacious Gothic stone structure of the 16th century, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and square embattled tower with 6 bells, and contains a handsome marble monument to John Silvester, late of Birthwaite Hall, an ingenious blacksmith formerly residing here, who left by will £5 a year to Kexburough school. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £375, with residence and 60 acres of glebe, in the gift of Wentworth Blackett Beaumont esq. M.P. and held by the Rev. Charles Sangster M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, rural dean of Silkstone. Here is an endowed school for boys and girls, which has been rebuilt and is now attended by upwards of eighty scholars, and is placed under government inspection. A spacious Sunday school-room, was erected in 1818 by subscription. There is a new day school rebuilt on the site of the old one in 1876. The charities amount to £300 a year, part of which is distributed among the poor, and the rest paid to a schoolmaster. Nail-making, chemical works and collieries furnish employment to inhabitants of Darton and its out townships. W. B. Beaumont esq. M.P. is lord of the manor and chief landowner and patron of the living. The soil is clay and loam; the subsoil is sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, clover and turnips. The population of the township in 1861 was 2,216, and in 1871, 2,582; and the area 1,378 acres; the area of the entire parish is 4,358 acres; rateable value £7,501; population in 1871, 5,197.
