Historical Description

DENBY, a township, formerly in the parish of Penistone, was formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1853, under Lord Blandford’s Act, including the townships of Denby, Gonthwaite and Ingbirchworth. and is 3 ½ miles north-north-west from Penistone, 17 north-west from Sheffield and 9 south-east from Huddersfield, in the southern division of the Riding, petty sessional division of Barnsley, Staincross wapentake, Penistone union, Barnsley county court district, Silkstone rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry, Ripon diocese, situated on a lofty eminence. The Huddersfield and Penistone branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway passes through and has a station at Denby dale, 1 mile north from the village. The church of St. John, originally erected in 1627, and rebuilt in 1843, is a stone building in the Pointed style, with a nave and square tower containing 1 bell, dated 1678. The registers, anterior to 1851, date from the 16th century; but since 1851 some are missing. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £150 with parsonage, in the gift of the vicar of Penistone, and held by the Rev. Job Johnson M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, by whom a new vicarage was erected in 1873, at a cost of £2,000. There art chapels for Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists and Wesleyan Reformers, and a meeting-house at High Flatts for the society of Friends. The charities amount to about £5 yearly value. There are manufactories of fancy woollen goods, dye works and stone quarries, and hand-loom weaving is carried on to a considerable extent. Capt. Henry Savile, who is lord of the manor, Walter Norton esq. Thomas Norton esq. James Prace esq. Joshua Kaye esq. and the trustees of Messrs. Firth. Wilby, Haigh, Heywood and Kilner are the chief landowners. The soil is various in quality and is chiefly pasture; the subsoil is stone. The area is 2,885 acres; rateable value £5,919; gross rental, £7,344; and the population in 1871 was 1,637.

Denby Dale is a picturesque valley several miles in extent, lying between two lofty hills, partly in Denby and Cumberworth townships, and is crossed by the Huddersfield and Penistone branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, which has a station here, on a stone viaduct 366 yards in length and 125 feet in height; the village of Denby Dale contains several woollen, silk and cotton manufactories and dye works. Rockwood House, the residence of Walter Norton esq. J.P. is a fine stone structure; near here are kennels belonging to W. Norton esq.
