The register dates from the year 1603, but is imperfect from 1654 to 1659, the remainder being in good condition. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value £260, in the gift of 24 sidesmen and held by the Rev. Richard Sedgwick, who is non-resident; the Rev. Professor Sedgwick, the celebrated geologist, and a native of this township, has been commemorated by the erection of a drinking fountain, consisting of a huge block of unhewn granite, bearing the inscription, “Adam Sedgwick.” By the side of a deviation road, 1,142 yards in length made and given by Miss Lucy Elam in accordance with the wishes of her late father, John Elam esq. is a monument with inscription, erected by the inhabitants as a testimony of their gratitude. Here are Congregational, Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels, and the society of Friends has a meeting house. There are several charities, amounting in the aggregate to about £200 annually, for schools and the poor; one known as Thistlethwaite’s, originally left for 6 poor men and 6 poor women, to receive one shilling each week, and now producing about £70 a year, is distributed under a scheme settled by the Charity Commissioners. The freeholders are the lords of the manor. The principal landowner is the Earl of Bective M.P. The soil and subsoil are limestone; the land is almost entirely in pasture.
