Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
Dobcross is a populous village, pleasantly situate on an eminence half a mile from Saddleworth station and was formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1844. The church of the Holy Trinity is a plain stone building, in the Italian style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, porch and a small tower, containing 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1780. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £200 with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester and held by the Rev. William Simpson M.A. of Queens’ College, Cambridge. Here is a Congregational chapel. Fairs are held here on the third Thursday in March and first Thursday in August. Here is a branch of the Manchester and County Bank Limited, also a Mechanics’ Institute. The manufacture of fancy woollen cloths, Shawls and flannels, is carried on to a considerable extent by Messrs. John Hirst and sons and others; and of machinery by Messrs. Hutchinson, Hollingworth and Company Limited. Dubcross is the head quarters of a company of the 6th West Riding Yorkshire Rifle Volunteers, a corps of nearly 400 men. The population in 1861 was 1,972; 1871 was 2,302.
