Historical Description

DODWORTH is a township, pleasant village and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1848 from the parish of Silkstone, having a station on a branch of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, a branch line from which has been formed for coal traffic, connecting the various collieries in the district with the main line to Manchester, 2 miles east from Silkstone, 2 west from Barnsley, 6 east from Penistone, 18 ¼ from Sheffield and 176 from London, situated on an eminence: it is in the southern division of the Riding, upper division of Staincross wapentake, Barnsley union, petty sessional division and county court district, Silkstone rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry and Ripon diocese. The parish is governed by a Local Board of Health of nine members. The church of St. John, built in 1845, is a substantial stone building in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave and square tower with 1 bell: the church contains a stained window erected in 1875, to the memory of the late Thomas Taylor esq. of Darfield, and also an organ erected in 1867. The register dates from the year 1848. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £165, in the gift of the vicar of Silkstone and held by the Rev. George Arthur Fry M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a chapel with school belonging to the Wesleyan Methodists. The charities are £21 a year. Dodworth Hall, the seat of Thomas E. Taylor esq. J.P. is delightfully situated on an eminence to the west of the village, commanding fine prospects. The township abounds with coal and has several extensive collieries, and a few stone quarries. The Duke of Leeds is lord of the manor. The chief landowners are John and Joseph Charlesworth and Thomas E. Taylor esqrs. The soil is clay and loam, and the subsoil sandstone. The chief crops are hay and oats. The area is 1,916 acres, and the population in 1861 was 2,117 and in 1871, 2,747; rateable value £16,293.
