Historical Description

DRAX is a village, township and parish, 5 miles northeast from Snaith and 7 south-east from Selby, in the Eastern division of the Riding, lower division of the wapentake of Barkstone Ash, county court district and union of Selby, rural deanery of Snaith and archdeaconry and diocese of York, bounded on the north by the Ouse, which separates it from the East Riding. The church of St. Peter and St. Paul in an ancient structure partly in the Norman and partly in the Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, and aisles, and a tower with a spire and peal of five bells. The churchyard has been enlarged by one acre given by Lord Beaumont, and is enclosed by a stone wall and iron railings, the cost of which was raised by subscriptions. The register dates from the year 1639, and is in fair condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £285, in the gift of the trustees of the late Lady Wheler and held by the Rev. Samuel Hobbs Hooper, of St. Aidans. There are almshouses in connection with Reade’s charity for three poor men and three poor women. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel here. James Tock esq. who is lord of the manor, and Lord Beaumont are the principal landowners. The soil is rich sand, clay and warp; subsoil sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, potatoes, turnips and flax. The population of the township in 1871 was 443; the area of the township it 1,382 acres; area of the parish, 6,970 acres; rateable value, £2,280; population 1,201.

The Free Grammar school, founded in 1609 by Charles Reade esq. is a large building with master’s house, & provides free education & clothing for 12 boys belonging to the parish, as well as gratuitous instruction for all others: five additional mixed schools in this parish are also supported by the same bequest; (boys), Rev. John Spink, master.
