The township of Drighlington adopted the Local Government Act in 1866, and is now governed by a local board of nine elected members: the place is lighted with gas. The Leeds, Bradford and Halifax Junction Railway Company have a station at Adwalton Moor. The old church at Drighlington, erected in 1793, was pulled down in 1878, and a new church built on the site, at a cost of £7,000, in the Perpendicular style of the fifteenth century, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and tower containing 8 bells, cast and hung in 1880; a vicarage house and school have also been built. The register dates from about the year 1815. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £350, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon and held by the Rev. Vavasour Fitz Hammond Hammond M.A. of Hertford College, Oxford. There are Congregational, Primitive Methodist, Wesleyan and Methodiat New Connexion chapels. There is also a Mechanics’ Institute. Fairs for cattle and horses are held at Adwalton on February 6th. March 9th. November 5th. December 23rd, and also on the Thursdays in Easter and Whitsun weeks. John Appleyard’s charity is £17 yearly. Colonel Hague is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The chief occupation is malting; the other trades are worsted spinning and cloth making. The coal trade has almost left the district, most of the collieries having being worked out. The soil is variable, but generally food, according to the out-cropping of the substrata. The higher ground, being light soil, in cultivated for turnips and following crops: lower grounds, or clayey soils, grass and occasionally wheat.
