Historical Description

DUNNINGTON is a parish, township and considerable village, pleasantly seated on the southern side of the high road from York to Bridlington, which here separates the East from the North Biding, about 4 miles east from York, with a station on the Derwent Valley Light railway, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Ouse and Derwent, York union and county court district, rural deanery of Escrick. archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Nicholas is an edifice of stone, in the Norman, style, consisting of chancel, nave with aisles, north porch and a western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 3 bells: the nave and aisles were rebuilt and the chancel and tower repaired in 1840: five of the windows are stained: the nave arcades have semi-circular-headed arches: the roof is of dark oak: in 1877 an aisle, comprising an organ-chamber and vestry, was added on the south side of the chancel; the church was, at the same time refitted and re-floored, new-stone mullions inserted in the windows and the chancel ceiling boarded with oak, at a total coat of £1,547; there are 294 sittings. The register dates from the year 1584. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £322, including 102 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Earl Brownlow, and held since 1906 by the Rev. Frederick Robert Halsey Herbert Noyes D.D. of University College, Durham. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, of brick, erected in 1868; there is also a Primitive Methodist chapel. The base of an ancient stone cross, which has for many years stood in the centre of the village, was removed to the garden of the rectory in 1840, and an obelisk erected in its stead; this was restored in 1900 by the Parish Council: opposite is a small lock-up, built in 1650. A pleasure fair is held on the second Monday in July yearly. There are three bread charities amounting to £2 yearly, the bread being distributed to three aged poor persons weekly. There is also an endowment of £50 yearly for repairs and maintenance of the church. The trustees of the late Sir Charles Edward Smith Dodsworth bart. (d. 1891) are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are John Joseph Hunt esq. the trustees of Miss Barker, and Sir Robert J. M. Walker bart, of Sand Hutton, but there are several smaller owners. The soil is various; subsoil is chiefly clay, loam and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, turnips, potatoes and some chicory is grown here. The area of Dunnington township is 2,444 acres of land and 2 of water; rateable value, £4,824; the population in 1911 was 726 in the township and 782 in the parish.
