Historical Description

EASINGTON is a parish, township and village, half-a-mile from the German Ocean, 1 from the Humber, 6 miles south-east from Patrington station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 16 south-east from Hedon and 6 north from Spurn Head; the parish includes the township of Out Newton, and is in the Holderness division of the Riding, south division of the wapentake of Holderness, South Holderness petty sessional division, Patrington union, county court district of Hedon, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of rubble and Roche Abbey stone, in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing a clock and 3 bells: the north doorway is Norman and the south porch of brick retains a Sun.-dial, dated 1811: the chancel was rebuilt in 1863: at the east end of the south aisle is a mural tablet to John Overton, ob. 1680: in 1890 a sum of about £300 was spent upon the church, the repairs including a new roof to the nave, the re-flooring of the tower and the erection of a stained window at the west end by W. H. Mabb esq. of Patrington, at a cost of about £150, as a memorial to Annie, his wife: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1584. The living is a vicarage, united to that of Skeffling and Kilnsea, joint net yearly value £200, and 78 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1898 by the Rev. Charles Marston Barnes. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel and a Wesleyan chapel, renovated in 1901. A cemetery of half an acre was formed in 1882, and is under the control of a Burial Board of 5 members. A field containing 3a. 3r. 27p. of land was bequeathed in 1811 by Robert Pattinson esq. for the education of children and providing them with books. There is a station here where the Life-Saving Rocket Apparatus is kept, with a telephone to Spurn Head and Holmpton. Major W. G. R. Chichester-Constable J.P. of Burton Constable, is lord of the manor and holds a court leet here yearly; Sir Robert James Milo Walker bart. of Sand Hutton, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Messrs. Georgo and Benjamin Clubley and Walter Biglin are the chief landowners. The soil is very rich and fertile; subsoil, chiefly clay and marl. The chief crops are beans wheat and oats. The area of the township is 2,193 acres of land and inland water and 890 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,057; the population in 1911 was 341 in the township and 673 in the parish.

Dimlington Cliff is contiguous thereto.
