Historical Description

ACKLAM, or East Acklam, is a parish, township, and village; 6 miles south-west from Wharram station on the Malton and Driffield section and 6 south-east from Kirkham Abbey station, on the York and Scarborough section of the North Eastern railway, 7 south from Malton and 14 north-east from York and 10 north from Pocklington, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, partly in St. Peter’s liberty and partly in Buckrose wapentake, Buckrose petty sessional division, in Malton union and county court district, rural deanery of Pocklington, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. John the Baptist, rebuilt in 1868 at a cost of about £1,300, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel with vestry on the north side, nave, south porch and a tower at the west end containing 3 bells: the fabric was underpinned in 1900, at a cost of £500: on November 5, 1911, in a gale of wind the south buttress was blown down and the church Tendered unsafe; it is, however, now (1913) being restored at an estimated cost of £650: there are sittings for 173 persons. The register dates from the year 1716, but there are earlier transcripts in the registry at York, dating from 1661: the succession of rectors and vicars is complete from 1223. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £229, including 57 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Mark Athel Noble L.Th. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. A charity of £1 a year, arising from land in Leavening, is applied to the support of the school, and there are other small charities for the poor. The land belongs to the Crown, Pocklington Grammar School and the trustees of the late Richard Smith esq. The Crown also owns the manor, of which J. Carter Jonas and Sons are the stewards. The township includes a large tract of land on the Wolds, which commands beautiful and extensive views; the road from Leavening is remarkable for its undulations, and the site of the village partakes of the same character. On the Wolds, earthworks may be traced for a considerable distance, running east from Acklam. The soil is sandy loam; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley and pasturage. The area of the township of Acklam-with-Barthorpe is 2,360 acres; rateable value, £1,941; the population in 1911 was 206 in the township and 556 in the parish.
