Leavening History
LEAVENING, a large well-built village, seated at the western foot of the Wolds, is a township in the parish of and 1 mile from Acklam, 6 miles south from Malton, 14 from York and 10 from Pocklington. Here is a Church mission room and Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Lord Middleton, who is lord of the manor, Basil Duncombe esq. of Kilnwick Percy, John Harrison Preston esq. J.P. of Burythorpe House, Mr. Thomas Hall and George Garbutt are the principal landowners. The soil in this neighbourhood is very fertile, and a good deal of gardening is carried on; the surface is undulating. The area is 1,292 acres; rateable value, £1,667; the population in 1911 was 350.
