Historical Description

EAST HARLSEY is a civil parish and village, 2 miles south-east from Welbury station on the Northallerton and Stockton branch of the North Eastern railway, 7 north-east from Northallerton and 10 south-west from Stokesley, in the Richomod division of the Riding, union and county court district of Northallerton, wapentake of Birdforth, petty sessional division of Allertonshire, rural deanery of Northallerton, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of st.

Oswald, formerly a chapel of ease to Ingleby Amcliffe, is a small but ancient edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a tower containing 2 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to the Revs. Jonathan Walkden Steele and Jonathan Steele, and there are others, and three ancient monuments, one of which has the recumbent effigy of a knight in chain armour, carrying a shield with a label of five points, the date being c. 1310: the church was restored in 1885, at a cost of about £1,221, when a north aisle was added, and affords 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1693. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £51, including 24 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Joseph Constantine esq. and held since 1912 by the Rev. John Price Jones B.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Here are Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. Charities:-George Lawson esq. left 1 sep. 1721, a library of 567 volumes, besides pamphlets, for the use of the incumbent; Mrs. Margaret Lawson left £5 yearly, £3 of which is for burses and a library for past and present scholars and £2 to be distributed at the discretion of the trustees for the benefit of the poor. Mrs. Garthwaite, widow of a former incumbent, left 20s. to the incumbent of East Harlsey, for the preaching of a yearly sermon on the 2nd of May, and 20s. to be laid out in bread, to be given away after the service; the charity now amounts to £2 13s. per annum. At Mount Grace, in this parish, are the ruins of the priory of that name, founded in 1396 by Thomas de Holland, Duke of surrey, for monks of the Carthusian order and dedicated to the Virgin; the founder retired to Cirencester 13 Jan. 1400, and dying there was buried in the abbey, but his remains were removed to Mount Grace in 1412: the ruins occupy a space of three acres and are entered on the west by a good and almost perfect Gothic gateway, a part of the building near to which has been converted into tenements; over the entrance doorway is the following inscription:—

DOM

1654

T L

The initials denote a member of the Lascelles family, who were then proprietors: on the north side of the smaller court are the remains of the cruciform church, 125 feet long, by 74 wide, with a Perpendicular central tower; the greater, or south court, had on the south side the frater (refectory), 100 by 18 feet; and there are still remains of the kitchen; the north, or conventual quadrangle, had five two-storeyed cells on each side, and of these 14 yet exist, and there are traces of a lavatory. Excavations were made in 1896, and two altars and a stone coffin, conjectured to be that of Thomas de Holland, 3rd Earl of Kent and Duke of surrey K.G. beheaded in 1400, were then discovered. On a woody height, about a mile from this place, are the ruins of a chapel, founded in 1515, where was the burial place of the priory. The Harlsey Estate of 1600 acres, including Harlsey Hall, belongs to Joseph Constantine esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor. Sir Hugh Bell bart. of Rounton Grange, is the principal landowner. The soil is clay; subsoil, stiff clay. Large beds of ironstone, freestone and limestone exist in this parish. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans. The parish comprises 3,060 acres; rateable value, £3,107; the population in 1911 was 327.

Public Elementary School, rebuilt in 1835, has been superseded by a school erected by Mrs. Grove Grady in 1893, at a cost of £1,000, for 70 children; average attendance, 47.
