Historical Description

EAST ROUNTON is a township, chapelry and village, about a miles north-east from Trenholme Bar station on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland section of the North Eastern railway, 6 south of Yarm and 7 south-west of Stokesley; it stands upon a rising eminence upon the eastern bank of the river Wiske, and affords a pleasing prospect of the hanging woods of Ingleby Arncliffe, and is in the Cleveland division of the Riding, west division of Langbaurgh liberty, petty sessional division of Thornaby and Yarm, Stokesley union and county court district and in the rural deanery of Stokesley and archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church is a small building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing one bell, and was restored in 1883—4 by the late Sir Lowthian Bell bart. at a cost of £1,500, under the direction of the late Mr. Robert J. Johnson, architect, and will seat about 60 persona. The register dates from the year 1584. The living is a chapelry, annexed to the rectory of West Rounton, joint net yearly value £250, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York and held since 1912 by the Rev. William Thomas Robson M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, who resides at West Rounton. The village hall, the gift of Sir Hugh and Lady Bell, was erected in 1907, and comprises large assembly room, billiard room, ladies’ room and a small library. Rounton Grange is the seat and property of Sir Hugh Bell bart. lord lieutenant, who is lord of the manor and the principal landowner: the mansion, built of local stone, was erected in 1876, on the site of an old farmhouse, from designs by Mr. Philip Webb, of London. John Dugdale esq. is also a landowner. The area is 1,621 acres; rateable value, £1,854; the population in 1911 was 180.
