Historical Description
EAST WITTON (Within & Without) are townships forming a parish, near the confluence of the rivers Cover and Ure, sometimes called Yore, 2 ½ miles south of Spennithorne station on the Northallerton and Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway, 2 south-east from Middleham and 4 south-east from Leyburn, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Hang West, Leyburn union and county court district, rural deanery of Catterick West, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The parish includes the hamlets of Cover Bridge, Colsterdale and Newstead. The church of St. John the Evangelist, built in 1809, at the sole expense of the Earl of Ailesbury, in commemoration of the Jubilee of King George III. is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: in 1854 an organ was introduced; this is to be replaced by a new organ at Easter, 1913: during the year 1871 the church underwent very extensive alterations, at the expense of George, 2nd Marquess of Ailesbury K.G. The stained east window was presented by Mary Caroline, Marchioness of Ailesbury: there are memorial windows in the baptistery presented by the Rev. W. T. Garrett, formerly curate of the parish, and one to his son, Lieut. Garrett, of the 60th Rifles, and on the south side a window presented by the late Earl of Stafford and his first wife, and a memorial window, erected by his tenants to George William Fredk. 2nd Marquess of Ailesbury K.G. d. 6 Jan. 1878: the church affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1697. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £187, including 65 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Hector Christie esq. J.P. of Jervaulx Abbey, and held since 1910 by the Rev. George Watts Garrod B.A. of London University, canon residentiary of Ripon Cathedral and proctor in Convocation. Knight’s charity 100 produces about £2 18s. which is distributed annually. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1882. The reading and billiard room was erected at the cost of H. Christie esq. At Braithwaite is an old and now disused lead mine. Hector Christie esq. J.P. of Jervaulx Abbey, is lord of the manor and the chief landowner. The soil is sandy; subsoil, gravelly. The land is chiefly in pasturage. The area of East Witton Within is 2,675 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £2,379; East Witton Without, 3,678 acres of land and 39 of water; rateable value, £2,718; the population in 1911 was, Within 257; Without, including Jervaulx, 143.
JERVAULX ABBEY, 1 ½ miles east, takes its name from the Cistercian abbey originally founded in 1141 at Fors in Wensleydale by Akar Fitz-Bardolph and colonized by monks from Savigny; these in 1150 were joined by other monks from Byland, and in 1156 the whole community was translated to this spot, where Conan de Dreux, Earl of Brittany and Richmond, had granted them a site in the valley of the Ure, or Yore, hence called “Urevall,” “Jorvaulx” and “Jervaux,” and now commonly corrupted into “Jarvis.” The abbey, after continuing in great splendour for several centuries, was surrendered at the Dissolution, its net revenues being then estimated at £234; the last abbot. Adam de Sedbergh, was hanged in 1537, for taking part, though unwillingly, in the insurrection raised by Robert Aske, called “the Pilgrimage of Grace”; previous to his execution he was confined in the Tower of London, where his name, cut in the walls of the prison chamber, still remains. The ruins, long used as a quarry, were carefully and completely excavated in 1806—7, by direction of Thomas, 1st Earl of Ailesbury, then owner of the estate, and consist of the church, portions of the cloisters, chapter house, frater (refectory), the undercroft of the dorter (dormitory), kitchen and infirmary buildings, the whole ranging in style from Transition Norman to Early English. The church, 270 feet in length, was cruciform, with a very short eastern arm, the ritual choir being prolonged three bays into the nave; very little of the walls of the church are now standing, but at the east end there remains a stone coffin, and west of the site of the high altar lies a mutilated effigy, supposed to represent Henry, 4th Baron Fitz Hugh K.G. ob. 11 Jan. 1424; one of the many altars which the church contained is yet in situ at the east end of the north transept, the upper slab retaining its consecration crosses, and it has a recess for relics; there are several piscinae and portions of the tiled pavement; of the cellarer’s buildings, on the west side of the cloisters, only the bare walls are left: south of the transept, and separated from it by a slype or passage is the chapter house, 48 by 35 feet, Early English, and divided into three aisles by arcades of three bays on either side; three of the piers, constructed of grey Nidderdale marble, are still perfect and the others nearly so, and the greater part of the walls is also standing: on the floor of the chapter house lie the tomb-slabs, with inscriptions in Latin, of seven of the abbots, including John de Kyngeston, 1st abbot, and Peter de Snape, abbot towards the middle of the fifteenth century, besides many other similas memorials; the refectory, south of the chapter house, exhibits a mixture of Norman and English work; of the vaulted undercroft of the dormitory there are some arches and traces of a small eastern chapel; of the abbots’ house, which stood to the south-east of the church, only the walls are left. Prior Aylmer, a prominent character in “Ivanhoe,” was of this monastery, and John Brompton, the chronicler, was abbot in 1436. The estate was purchased in Feb. 1887, for a sum of £310,000, by Lord Masham, but part of it was sold by his son, the present Lord Masham, in 1907 to Hector Christie esq. The adjacent mansion, called Jervaulx Abbey, now the property and residence of Hector Christie esq. J.P. is a fine building of stone in the Elizabethan style, and stands in a park of 120 acres.
Public Elementary school, erected in 1817, by the Marquess of Ailesbury, for 80 children, & enlarged in 1899; average attendance, 50.
