Historical Description

EASTRINGTON is a parish, township and village with a station a quarter of a mile south on the Hull and Selby section of the North Eastern railway, and another on the north on the Hull and Barnsley railway, 4 miles east from Howden, 19 ¼ west from Hull and 194 ¾ from London, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Howdenshire, union and county court district of Howden, rural deanery of Howden, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Michael is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Perpendicular style, with some traces of Saxon work, and consists of chancel of three bays and nave of three bays, both with clerestory, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 3 bells: in the chancel wall is an inscribed stone recording its rebuilding in 1632, by Sir Michael Warton kt. of Beverley: there are also several modern tablets to the Bell family: the eastern portions of the aisles anciently formed chapels: the north chapel retains its piscina and three brackets for statues and contains also an alabaster tomb, with recumbent male and female effigies and the date 1696, besides several ancient monumental slabs with inscriptions, and a stone coffin slab with ornamental carving in relief: in the south chapel is another piscina and a stone credence: the tower arch is Norman: in the porch are some very early carvings representing in a rude form the beasts mentioned in the book of Revelation, and the greater part of the effigy of a knight is built into one of the walls: the church was thoroughly restored and reseated in 1896, and affords 260 sittings. The register dates from the year 1567. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £195, with 134 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1909 by the Rev. William Percy Hains, of St. Aidan’s. The lay impropriators of the tithes are Messrs. Liversidge and Sons, Selby. There are charities in the hands of the vicar and churchwardens and certain others as trustees for the time being, of about £9 yearly, and bread is distributed quarterly at the church. The Wesleyan chapel here was built in 1827, and the primitive Methodist chapel in 1871. A cemetery of 2 acres was formed in 1875, and is under the control of a Burial Board of 9 members. A feast and horse show is held on the third Monday in June. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, potatoes' and turnips. The area of the township is 2,032 acres of land and 18 of water; rateable value, £7,210; the population in 1911 was 424 in the township and 748 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected with teacher's residence in 1877, for 110 children; average attendance, 110; there is an endowment of about £20 yearly.
