Historical Description

At Ebberston, about half a mile to the north of the York road, there is an elegant little stone mansion, the property of Sir Charles Hotham, Bart. taken from the plan of a Roman villa.

EBBERSTON is a civil parish and village, 1 ½ miles west from Snainton station on the Pickering and earner branch of the North Eastern railway, 11 west-by-south from Scarborough, 6 east from Pickering and 11 ½ northeast from Malton, in the Whitby division of the Riding, Pickering Lythe wapentake, petty sessional division of Pickering Lythe East, union of Pickering, county court district of Malton, rural deanery of Malton, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary, which stands half a mile from the village, is a plain edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle and a square embattled western tower containing 3 bells: there are six memorial windows, two being memorials to the Rev. John Ellis, 34 years vicar, d. 1870, and his daughter, Mrs. Pexton, d. 1864; and two to the Rev. Richard Rudd M.A. late vicar, and Margaret, his wife, both of whom died in 1879: in 1908 a chancel screen of oak was provided at a cost of about £50: the church was restored in 1879 at a cost of £900, under the care of the late Ewan Christian, architect, when the walls of the nave and chancel were rebuilt, new roofs put on and the interior refitted: there is a memorial window, erected by Mrs. Baker in memory of her husband, the late John Baker esq: there are 160 sittings. The register dates from the year 1679. The living is a vicarage united with Allerston, joint net yearly value £300, including 48 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1904 by the Rev. James Simpson Salman M.A. of St. John’s College. Cambridge. A sum of £180 is granted by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners towards the maintenance of curates. The appropriate tithe, amounting to £55, is assigned to the Dean of York and a lessee. There is a Mission room and a Wesleyan chapel. Sir George Everard Arthur Cayley bart. who is lord of the manor, and Francis Baker esq. J.P. of Westwood End, Scarborough, are the principal landowners. The soil is gravel and clay; subsoil, clay.

The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area of the parish is 6,086 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value, £4,233; the population in 1911 was 554 in the civil parish, and 994 in the ecclesiastical parish.

By a Local Government Board Order which came into operation March 25, 1886, the portion of Snainton township formerly in Ebberston was amalgamated with Snainton.
