Historical Description

ECCLESALL BIERLOW, a township and ecclesiastical parish, extending to the borders of Derbyshire, formed in 1849 from the parish of Sheffield, and giving name to a union, is in the southern division of the Riding, municipal and parliamentary borough of Sheffield, Hallamshire district, south division of the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, Sheffield county court district, West Riding division, Sheffield rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of York. The Ecclesall station of the Midland railway is situated on the Abbeydale road, about one mile from the church. The church of St. [ _____] situated near Banner Cross, 3 miles south-west from Sheffield, and built in 1788, is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, and a square tower containing 1 bell; the church has been restored and enlarged and two stained windows, in memory of Miss Marshall, inserted; the east window is also stained. The register dates from the year 1830. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £400, in the gift of the vicar of Sheffield and held by the Rev. George Sandford M.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. In the vicinity of the church are many mansions and villa residences, occupied by the merchants and manufacturers of Shelfield. Holmwood, the seat of Henry Vickers esq. is a fine building. Banner Cross Hall, the castellated residence of George Wilson esq. J.P. is situated in a well-wooded park. Whiteley Wood Hall is a tine old mansion, now the residence and property of Thomas R. Gainsford esq. Earl Fitzwilliam is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Mrs. Greaves, Robert Younge esq. Mrs. Wostenholm, William Henry Watson esq. Thomas Firth esq. and Ashley Creswick esq. The soil is loam, clay and peat; subsoil sand, clay and sandstone. The chief crops are grass, corn and turnips. The township contains 4,343 acres; rateable value £268,100; and a population in 1871 of 87,419; the ecclesiastical parish contained in 1871 a population of 1,724; the area is 2,600 acres. The greater part of the population is in the town of Sheffield.
