ECCLESFIELD is a township, extensive parish and village and a polling place for the Southern division of the Riding, 5 miles north from Sheffield, 6 west from Masbro’ and 10 south from Barnsley, on the Old North road from Leeds to London, in the upper division of Strafforth and Tickhill wapentake, union of Wortley, Sheffield county court district, Hallamshire, rural deanery of Ecclesfield and archdeaconry and diocese of York. The south Yorkshire railway traverses this district, worked by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company, with stations at Grange Lane and Ecclesfield. The church of St. Mary, built about 1470, and formerly called the “Minster of the Moors,” is a building in the Perpendicular style, consisting of a chance], nave, aisles and transepts, porch, and a tower with a clock and a peal of 8 bells: it was restored some years back, and in 1860—67 extensive internal repairs were made, an unsightly gallery in the transept removed and the fine old carved oak roof of the chancel and the stalls and roof screen thoroughly restored: there are memorial windows to Henry Fowler, Bernard John Wake, Henry Jackson and W. Smith esqrs. and to Mrs. Gatty; a fine table monument of Sir Richard Scott, a follower of Lord Strafford; some ancient glass, numerous mural tablets, and a stone font, date 1662: the carved work and stained glass of this church were highly eulogised by Roger Dodswortli, the Yorkshire antiquary. There are many gentlemen’s seats in the parish. At Sheffield Lane are the paddocks of J. Johnstone esq. of Lockerby, which is one of the largest establishments in the county for thoroughbred horses, and dates from 1842. The Duke of Norfolk is lord of the manor, and William smith esq. of Barnes Hall, Charles Booth esq. and Rev. Thomas John Jeffcock, vicar of Wolverhampton, are chief landowners.
