Historical Description

EGTON is a small market town and civil parish, a mile north-north-east from Egton Bridge station on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland branch of the North-Eastern railway, 7 south-west from Whitby, in the Whitby division of the Riding, east division of Langbaurgh liberty, petty sessional division of Whitby-strand, Whitby union and county court district, rural deanery of Whitby, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The ancient church of St. Hilda, which stood on an eminence one mile west, was removed in 1878 and the present Church erected from the materials, on a site close to the village, at the sole cost of the Messrs. Foster of Halifax, and (including the schools) amounting to £20,000; it is of stone, in the Norman style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and a south-western tower with a saddle-back roof containing 2 ancient bells, and a third bell, added by the parishioners: the clock was presented by Abraham Foster esq. in memory of the late Queen Victoria: the Norman arches of the old fabric have been reincorporated: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1628. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £285, including 3 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Montagu Cecil Dickenson. The appropriate tithe is assigned to the Archbishop of York, and amounts to £175. The market is held on Tuesday. Fairs are held for cattle on the second Tuesday in January, the Tuesday before February 14th, second Tuesday in March, Tuesday before Palm Sunday, Tuesday before May 13th, and on every Tuesday until July 15th, and Tuesday before August 12th, on September 4th and Tuesday before October 11th, November 23rd and second Tuesday in December, and on November 5th for hiring servants. The late John Foster esq. left £1,000, the interest on which is to be distributed in charities. There are other charities of £5 2s. 0d. yearly value. In the village is cross, built of local stone, which is an exact reproduction of Old Whitby market cross, the ruins of which now stand in front of the Abbey; it was erected in 1912 to the memory of the late John Foster esq. J.P. by his sons and the tenants of the estate. An inscribed stone of Roman date, formerly standing one side of the road near Julian Park, has been removed to the York museum; a Roman road, still traceable, ran through the parish, in which many pre-historic remains have been found. At Old Randymere are now the Whitby waterworks, which include seven springs at Hazelhead. John Kenneth Foster esq. J.P. is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is various. The chief crops are barley and oats. The area is 18,312 acres of land and 66 of water; rateable value, £8,495; the population of the civil parish in 1911 was 1,026, and of the ecclesiastical, 704.
