Historical Description

Ealand is a small township in the parish of Halifax, pleasantly situated on the south banks of the Calder. The village is large, and is the only one in the whole parish which ever had the privilege of holding a market by charter. This charter, (which has long been lost), was dated 10 Edward I. when that king, at the request of John de Warren, Earl of Warren and Surrey, granted to John de Eland, (afterwards Sir John), a free market on Tuesday at his manor of Eland, and two fairs then by six days, viz. one next day afore the eve, on the day of the eve, and on the day of St. Peter in Bunds. There is still a small market-cross remaining, and toll is taken by the lord’s steward when any thing is offered to sale in the streets; the fairs are also kept up, but no markets of any consequence have been held here for many years, owing to the great increase of trade at Halifax.

Ealand Chapel is reputed to be the oldest place of worship in the whole parish, next to Halifax church. Some of the inhabitants here would have it believed, that it is nearly as old as the time of the Conquest. There is, however, no mention of a church or chapel in Doomsday-book.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

ELLAND is a town formed into an ecclesiastical parish from the parish of Halifax, with a station on the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 3 miles south from Halifax and 4 north-west from Huddersfield, forming with Greetland a township in the parish of Halifax: it is a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, in Halifax union and county court district, Morley wapentake, Halifax rural deanery, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, situate on the river Calder and Calder and Hebble navigation, and is well paved and lighted with gas, and governed by a Local Board of Health of 9 members. The church of St. Mary is an ancient stone structure, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, with a square tower at the west end containing 8 bells; the east window is stained, and contains the arms of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster; there is an ancient stone font. The register dates from the year 1559, and is in fair condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Halifax and held by the Rev. Francis Musson, of St. Bees. There are Congregational, Wesleyan, Methodist New Connexion, Unitarian, Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels. The charities for distribution amount to £70 yearly. This township is celebrated for its excellent stone, used for building purposes. The chief industries are the woollen, worsted and cotton manufactures, machine and card making for machinery, and brick and the making. The cemetery is situated near the town and consists of about 8 acres, one half being consecrated; it contains two mortuary chapels. The trustees of the Savile estates are lords of the manor.
