ELLERBURNE is an ecclesiastical parish on the high road between Pickering and Scarborough, 3 ½ miles north-north-east from the Marishes Road station on the Scarborough and Whitby branch, and 1 ½ north from Thornton Dale station, on the Pickering and Seamer branch of the North Eastern railway, 9 north from Malton and 16 west from Scarborough, in the Whitby division of the Riding, Pickering Lythe wapentake, petty sessional division of Pickering Lythe West, Pickering union, Malton county court district, rural deanery of Malton, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. Ellerburne Beck, a small stream, runs through the village. Ellerburne-with-Farmanby forms for civil purposes part of Thornton Dale parish. The church of St. Hilda, in Ellerburne Dale, three-quarters of a mile from the village, is an ancient edifice of stone, in mixed styles with some traces of Saxon work, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower containing one bell: the chancel retains a piscina and an aumbry, and there are 100 sittings. Part of a cross is built in the south wall. The church was restored in 1905 under the direction of Mr. William D. Caroe, architect. A panelled reredos of carved oak, executed by Mr. Bichard Wray, a native of this place, was erected in 1908. The register dates from the year 1601. The living is a vicarage, consolidated with that of Wilton, joint net yearly value £257, including 41 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1898 by the Rev. James Thornton B.A. of University College, Durham. In Ellerburne proper there is only one farmhouse and a few cottages, all the other inhabitants of the parish being in the township of Farmanby. Champley’s charity amounts to about £2 11s. yearly. Other charities produce 16s. 8d. yearly. Richard Hill esq. of Thornton Hall, is lord of the manor and the principal landowner of this and also of Farmanby township. The soil is clay and limestone; the subsoil is limestone rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats and some pasture land. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1911 was 419.

The children attend the schools in the contiguous parish of Thornton-le-Dale.
