Historical Description

ELLOUGHTON is a village, township and parish, on the road from Hull to Selby, 1 ½ miles north-east from Brough station on the Hull and Selby branch of the North Eastern railway, 10 west-by-north from Hull and 8 south-west from Beverley; Howdenshire division of the Riding, Hunsley Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, South Hunsley Beacon petty sessional division, Beverley union and county court district, rural deanery of Howden, arch deaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary is a cruciform building of stone, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, about 1846, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells: many of the windows are stained: the south doorway has a Pointed arch with dog-tooth mouldings: the church was in 1901 renovated, and a porch built at a cost of about £800. The register dates from the year 1657. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £310, including 8 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1904 by the Rev. Sidney John Soady M.A. of Clare College, Cambridge. There is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1815, with 250 sittings, and a Primitive Methodist chapel. Henry Broadley Harrison-Broadley esq. M.P., J.P. of Welton House, is lord of the manor, chief landowner and lay rector. The soils are gravelly and sandy; the subsoils, chalk and sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area of the township of Elloughton-cum-Brough is 1,627 acres of land, 507 of tidal water and 562 of foreshore; rateable value, £9,253; the population in 1911 was 1,067.

Petty Sessions are held at the Law Courts, Hull, every Wednesday at 11 a.m. & at the Court house, Brough, first Saturday in the month at 10 a.m.
