Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
ELSECAR is a considerable village and an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1844 from the parish of Wath-upon-Dearne, in the township of Nether Hoyland (from which place it is 1 mile distant south-east), 6 south-east from Barnsley, in the southern division of the Riding, wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill, Barnsley union and county court district, Wath rural deanery and York archdeaconry and diocese. A branch of the Dearne and Dove canal passes here. There is a goods station on the south Yorkshire railway; the nearest passenger station is at Wombwell, on the same line, 1 ½ miles distant. The church of the Holy Trinity was built by Earl Fitzwilliam in 1840 at a cost of £2,500, and is a stone building, consisting of chancel, nave, organ chamber, and square tower surmounted by a lofty spire; the west gallery and font are of Roche Abbey stone; there are 500 sittings, all free. The register dates from the year 1843. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £238, originally endowed with £1,000 £3 per Cent. Stock, which has since been augmented, and is in the gift of the Earl Fitzwilliam, and held by the Rev. William Hodges. There are chapels for Wesleyans, Congregationalists and Catholics. This village has increased in importance and population in consequence of the number of persons employed at the ironworks of Mr. George Dawes, and the numerous collieries and ironstone pits worked by Earl Fitzwilliam, who has built nearly 150 houses in the village for the labouring population. There is a reading-room, supported chiefly by Earl Fitzwilliam, the persons using it, however, paying a small subscription; it is supplied with literary and scientific magazines, and other periodicals and newspapers. A free lending library of several hundred volumes is attached to the church for the use of the Sunday school. Here are also gas works. A Saturday market was established here in April, 1856, and a Market Hall has been erected by Earl Fitzwilliam, the principal landowner. The soil is marl and clay; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans &c. The population of the ecclesiastical parish, which includes Stubbin, in 1871 was 2,161: area, 600 acres.
