Historical Description

ELVINGTON is a parish, township and pretty village, seated on an acclivity on the western bank of the navigable river Derwent, which is here crossed by a stone bridge of two arches, and is 7 miles east-south-east from York, with a station on the Derwent Valley Light railway, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Onse and Derwent wapentake and petty sessional division, York union and county court district, rural deanery of Escrick, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of Holy Trinity, entirely rebuilt in 1877, at a cost of £3,000, is an edifice of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel with polygonal apse, nave with arcade of four arches, north aisle, north porch and a north-western tower surmounted by a wooden belfry, containing a clock and 4 bells; the base of the tower forms the entrance to the church, which has sittings for 214 persons. The register dates from the year 1600. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £280, including residence and 202 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Rev. Canon J. Erskine Clarke M.A. vicar of St. Luke's, Battersea, Surrey, and held since 1896 by the Rev. William Henry Phillips L.Th. of Durham University. There is a Wesleyan chapel in the village. Brinkworth Hall, the residence of John Whiteley Ward esq. J.P. is a modern building of brick, standing in a park of 70 acres, about a mile west from the village. The trustees of Lord Wenlock (d. 1912) are chief landowners here; there are several smaller owners. The soil is clay, loam and sandy; subsoil, clay. The meadow ground adjoining the river is rich, and is called the Ings. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley and turnips. The area is 2,358 acres of land, 8 of water and 8 of tidal water; rateable value, £2,711; the population in 1911 was 301.

Public Elementary School (mixed), erected in 1858, for 76 children; average attendance, 50; Miss Cecilia Auckland, mistress.

The School Committee consists of six managers, four foundation, one appointed by the parish & one by county authority; Rev. W. H. Phillips, chairman & correspondent.
