Historical Description

ELMLEY (or Emley) is a large parish, township and village in the southern division of the Riding, lower division of Agbrigg wapentake, Wakefield union and county court district, rural deanery of Silkstone, archdeaconry of Craven, and diocese of Ripon, 8 miles south-west from Wakefield, 9 north-west from Barnsley, 9 north from Penistone, 5 from Horbury Bridge railway station, 4 from Haigh station, 4 north from Denby Dale station and 1 ½ north from Skelmanthorpe station on the Clayton West branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway. The church of St. Michael, erected in the early part of the 13th century, is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, porch and embattled tower containing 3 bells, two of which are dated respectively 1786 and 1830, one being undated: the church contains a very fine screen, and one stained window: the font has become dilapidated. The register dates from the year 1600 and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £422, in the gift of Capt. Henry Savile, of Rufford Abbey, Notts, and held by the Rev. James Bandinel M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. There are some remains of an ancient Market Cross. There are chapels for Primitive Methodists, Wesleyan Methodists and Wesleyan Reformers. A reading room supplied with newspapers and periodicals has been established, chiefly through the liberality of Captain H. Savile. Ironstone was formerly obtained in this parish to a great extent, and there are still collieries. The charities are £16 yearly value. Henry Bailey esq. left £8 yearly to be given to 10 old men and 10 old women at Christmas. The principal landowners are Captain H. Savile, who is lord of the manor, and W. B. Beaumont esq. M.P. Soil stong clay; subsoil various minerals. The district is principally agricultural. The population of the township in 1871 was 1,275; area 3,556 acres, rateable value £6,033; the area of the entire parish is 4,187; population, including Skelmanthorpe, 2,600.
