The church of St. Mary is a small building of red sandstone, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower: the earliest part of the church dates from 1200, the styles ranging from Early English to Early Perpendicular: a new communion table of oak, with cover, and a pulpit frontal were presented in 1900 by Mrs. Owen and Miss Stewart, sisters of the Rev. W. E. Stewart M.A. incumbent 1897—1904, and the oak eagle lectern was presented by Mrs. Lawson Tait, another of his sisters: the church was restored in 1889 at a cost of £900, and new roofed in 1900 at a cost of £180: it affords 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1565. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £120, in the gift of the vicar of Gilling, and held since 1904 by the Rev.
