Historical Description

ESCRICK is a parish, township and village on the high Toad to Selby, with a station 1 mile from the village on the York and Doncaster extension of the North Eastern railway, and is 6 miles south-east from York, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Ouse and Derwent wapentake and petty sessional division, York union and county court district, rural deanery of Escrick, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Helen, erected upon the old site by the Rev. the Hon. S. W. Lawley, as a memorial to Paul Beilby Lawley Thompson, 1st Baron Wenlock, d. 9th May, 1852, was consecrated and opened July 1st, 1857, and is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, baptistery, south porch and a lofty embattled tower with crocketed pinnacles at the north-east angle containing a clock and 5 bells: at the west end of the nave is a projecting baptistery containing a font of white marble; the columns of the nave arcades are of dark Devonshire marble; in the nave is a marble monument executed by Admiral H. S. H. the late Prince Victor of Hohenlohe Langenburg G.C.B. and erected in 1876, by her family, to Caroline, wife of Paul, 1st Baron Wenlock, who died 2 May, 1868: a new choir vestry was added in 1896: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1617. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £407, including 100 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Hon. Irene Constance Lawley, and held since 1910 by the Rev. Charles Henry Bathurst Trollope M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Village Institute was built in 1908 at a cost of about £1,000, from designs by Mr. C. W. Thompson. Here are five almshouses built by the 5th Baron Wenlock P.C., G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., K.C.B. (d. 1912), his brothers and sisters. Escrick Park, the property of the trustees of the late Lord Wenlock P.C., G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., K.C.B. contains about 450 acres of rich pasture land, well wooded and stocked with deer; the house is now (1913) unoccupied.

Holly Carr Woods, adjoining, are planted with rhododendrons and form a great attraction. The Hon. Irene Constance Lawley is lady of the manor and sole landowner. The chief crops are barley, oats, wheat and potatoes. The soil is rich and various; subsoil, gravel and partly clay. The area is 4,343 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £8,525; the population of the township in 1911 was 597, and in the ecclesiastical parish, 793.

Police Station, 1 inspector, 1 sergeant & 7 constables.

Petty Sessions are held at Escrick the first Thursday & at York Castle the second or third Saturday in every month at 11 a.m.

ESCRICK OUT RELIEF DISTRICT.

By Local Government Board Order, Escrick has been formed into an Out Relief District, from York Union, and under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 & 57 Vict.), a Rural District has been formed. The townships in the union are:-Deighton, Dunnington, Elvington, Escrick, Grimston, Heslington, Kerby, Langwith, Naburn, Stamford Bridge West with Scoreby, Stillingfleet with Moreby, Thorganby with West Cottingworth, Water Fulford & Wheldrake. The area is 30,282 acres; population in 1911 was 5,872; rateable value, 1913, £59,333.

The guardians meet at the York Union Board room, on alternate Saturdays, at 11.45 a.m.
