Historical Description

Sleights is a handsome village, four miles from Whitby, with a hall belonging to Mrs. Bateman, once the seat of the Burdett family. Aislaby, on a commanding height on the north, is the residence of Mark Noble and John Benson, Esqrs. In the valley below is Esk-hall, the seat of J. C. Coates, esq., and Woodlands, the pleasant mansion of H. W. Yeoman, esq.

ESKDALESIDE-CUM-UGGLEBARNBY is a civil parish, in the Whitby division of the Riding, liberty and petty sessional division of Whitby-strand, Whitby union and county court district, rural deanery of Whitby, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York; it comprises the village of sleights.

The area, rateable value and population are given with Eskdaleside.

There are Wesleyan Methodist chapels at Iburndale and Little Beck.

The children of Ugglebarnby attend the school at Sleights.

Public Elementary school, sleights (mixed), erected in 1834, & enlarged in 1886, for 135 children; average a tendance, 100.
