Historical Description

ESTON, including south Eston, Old Eston and Grangetown, form a parish, 4 miles south-east from Middlesbrough, 5 north-north-west from Guisborough, 8 east from Stockton and 6 south-west from Redcar, in the Eastern division of Langbaurgh liberty, petty sessional division of Langbaurgh North, Middlesbrough union and county court district, rural deanery of Middlesbrough, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. There is a station on a branch line from Middlesbrough and also a station at Grangetown on the Darlington and Saltburn branch of the North Eastern railway. For Parliamentary purposes part of Grangetown is included in the borough of Middlesbrough, and the remainder with south and Old Eston are in the Cleveland division of the Riding.

Eston, is under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. 73), governed by an Urban District Council, which has jurisdiction over a portion of south Bank, superseding the Local Board formed in 1884. The village is situated at the base of Eston Moor, a detached hill of considerable elevation, terminating in a bold point or spur called “Eston Nab,” and is bounded on the north by the river Tees, on the south by the Cleveland hills, on the east by the parish of Wilton, and on the west by the township of Normanby and parish of Ormesby.

The ancient church of St. Helen, originally the parish church, and consisting of chancel and nave and an embattled western tower, is now used only as a mortuary chapel. Christ Church, erected in 1883—4 at a cost of al out £5,000, on a site given by Major Stapylton, is a building of pressed brick with stone dressings, and consists of chancel, nave with clerestory, aisles, south-west porch and an incomplete tower at the south-west angle, containing one bell: there are sittings for 500 persons. The first legible register dates from the year 1590, and contains many curious entries, but there are some of earlier date. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £270, including 11 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Aichbishop of York, and held since 1910 by the Rev. Edgar Crofts Lace M.A. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. The tithe, amounting to £320, is appropriated to the Aichbishop of York. The vicarage house, opposite the church, was built in 1898. The Church Hall, erected in 1910 at a cost of £1,400, contains meeting rooms and a hall seating 250 persons. Here is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1858, seating 250 persons, with an attached schoolroom, erected in 1904; there are also Wesleyan Methodist, Primitive Methodist and United Methodist chapels and salvation Army barracks. A cemetery of 20 acres was formed in 1863 and enlarged in 1882 and again in 1895, at a total cost of £3,000; it is under the control of a Burial Board of nine members. Eston Hospital, built by Messrs. Bolckow, Vaughan and Co. Ltd. from designs by Mr. W. H. Blessley, architect, of Middlesbrough, and opened in 1884, was enlarged in 1904, at a cost of £5,300, for 66 patients. An X-ray apparatus was installed in 1911. Eston Urban District sanatorium was erected in 1893 at a cost, including site, of £2,466, and will hold 36 patients; the building includes a disinfecting chamber, mortuary and isolation ward. The Oddfellows’ Hall, a building of large dimensions, was erected in 1856. Eston Workmens Institute, in High street, opened in 1902, is a structure of red brick, erected at a cost of about £1,700, and comprises recreation and reading rooms and a billiard room, enlarged in 1908, at a cost of £600. The Cleveland ironstone was first discovered in this parish by the late John Vaughan esq. and John Marley esq. C.E. of Darlington: in connection with its working are extensive blast furnaces, iron foundries and steam sawing mills, at Branch End, south Bank and Cargo Fleet, or Cleveland Port. The soil is alluvial; subsoil, sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and clover. Miles John Stapylton esq. of Myton Hall, Helperby, who is lord of the manor, Messrs. Belckow, Vaughan and Co. Limited, and the trustees of Lady Herwley's charities are the principal landowners. The area of the civil parish and Urban District is 2,443 acres of land, 10 of inland water, 48 of tidal water and 357 of foreshore; rateable value, £81,282; the population in 1911 was 12,026, and in the ecclesiastical parish, 11,476.
