Historical Description

ETTON is a parish, township and village, 1 ¼ miles north from Cherry Burton station on the Beverley and Market Weighton section of the North Eastern railway, and 4 ½ north-west from Beverley, in the Holdernese division of the Riding, Hunsley Beacon division of the wapentake of Harthill, North Hunsley Beacon petty sessional division, Beverley union and county court district, rural deanery of Beverley, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary, pleasantly seated on an eminence, is an ancient building of stone in the Early Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and a massive but low western tower, containing a clock, presented by Mrs. Grimston, and 3 bells: the chancel, which retains a piscina and an aumbry, was rebuilt by the Rev. W. H. Dixon M.A. rector 1844-6; during the excavations made for this purpose, part of a tomb with the mutilated recumbent effigy of a lady, and a shield of arms, supposed to be those of the Mawley family, were discovered under the wall, and are now in the chancel: the stained east and other windows in the chancel are memorials to Mrs. Machell and the Grimston and Vernon families: the church was reseated and completely restored, and the upper part of the tower rebuilt by the late Lord Hotham in 1868: a new organ and organ chamber were erected in 1892, at a cost of £400: the church affords 130 sittings. The register dates from the year 1560. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £340, including 36 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Lord Hotham, and held since 1913 by the Rev. John Butler Cholmeley B.A. of Selwyn College, Cambridge. The Primitive Methodist chapel here, built in 1845, was restored in 1884. There is also a Beading Boom with about 50 members. The charities include one given by Ald. Towers Wallis and Benjamin Ealand, of Etton, who left jointly £60, which sum has been invested in land at Faxfleet; Mrs. Legard left £10, and the Rev. I. Fox left £100 in the 4 per cents, the interest on which are given, to the poor in bread. At Low Hall, in 1815 the residence of Sir Charles Legard bart. are the kennels of the Holderness Hunt, comprising 52 couples; the hounds hunt during the season on Monday and Thursday Holderness proper, and on Tuesday and Friday on the Wolds; Harry Whitworth esq. of Scorborough Hall, is the master. Market Weighton and Hull are convenient places for hunting visitors. Mr. John Edwin Wood, who is lord of the manor, and Lord Hotham are the chief landowners. The soil is various; subsoil, chalk and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The acreage is 3,729; rateable value, £4,595; the population in 1911 was 428.
