Historical Description
In Everingham church-yard there is a very old font, ornamented with carving in the Saxon style, which formerly stood in the church.
EVERINGHAM is a township and parish, 2 miles north-west from Everingham station on the Selby and Market Weighton branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 west-by-north from Market Weighton and 5 south from Pocklington, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Holme Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, Holme Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Weighton, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The name is derived from St. Everilda, who established a religious house here in the middle of the seventh century; in an ancient manuscript it has been found spelt “Everildisham.” The church of St. Emeldis is a small and plain building of stone and brick in the Norman style, consisting of apsidal chancel of brick, nave and an embattled western tower of stone, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells: the nave was rebuilt about the end of the 17th century: in 1871 the roof was renewed and raised and new windows inserted: the stained east window is a memorial to the parents of the Rev. James Le Maistre LL.D. late vicar (1871-91), and to Sir Charles Dodsworth, 3rd bart. d. 28 July, 1857, and Elizabeth (Armstrong), his wife, d. 12 July, 1853: there are also three other stained windows: the church affords 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1634. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £218, including 132 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of trustees, end held since 1891 by the Rev, Sylvester John James Sullivan le Maistre M.A, of Keble College, Oxford. Everingham Park is the seat of Baroness Herries (Duchess of Norfolk), a lineal descendant of the Constables of Flamborough, who became possessed of this manor in the year 1510: the mansion is a spacious edifice of brick with stone dressings, designed by Carr, and erected about a century since: attached is a Roman Catholic chapel in the Classic style, erected in 1839 by William, 13th Baron Herries, and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and St. Everilda; it will seat from 300 to 400 persons: the interior is adorned with Corinthian columns, between which are statues and subjects in relief, and on pedestals in various parts of the chapel are figures of the Twelve Apostles, the Virgin, St. Everilda, St. Joseph and St. John the Baptist: at the east end, in a semicircular apse, is the high altar of Italian marble: the font, curiously carved with birds and animals, is said to be Saxon: a new marble font was provided about 1901, with a cover surmounted by a figure of St. John the Baptist: St. Everilda’s Well, formerly within the garden and used by the villagers, is now closed. The park, which existed in the time of Edward I. contains 175 acres and a lake of 8 acres, and is well-timbered and stocked with deer. The village feast is held on July 9, the festival of St. Everilda. The Duchess of Norfolk, as Baroness Herries, is lady of the manor and owner of all the land, excepting the glebe. The soil is sandy and gravelly, with a portion of stiff clay. The chief crops are barley, rye, oats, wheat, turnips and potatoes. The area is 2,970 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £2,737; the population in 1911 was 236.
Public Elementary School, erected in 1871 by the late Lord Herries, for 130 children; average attendance, 42; Sister Mary de Sales, mistress.
