Historical Description

FARNHAM is a village and parish 2 miles north from Knaresborough and 6 south-west from Boroughbridge, in the Eastern division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Claro, union and county court district of Knaresborough, rural deanery of Knaresborough, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church (name unknown) is a stone edifice of mixed architecture, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, with a tower in which are 3 bells, and was restored in 1854 at the sole expense of the Rev. Thomas Collins, at that time incumbent, under the direction of the late Sir G. G. Scott R.A.: the chancel is Norman and has nine stained windows, viz. three on the north, three on the south and three forming the east window; there are also two smaller stained windows. The register dates from 1570 and is in good preservation. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £135, in the alternate presentation of Thomas Collins esq. and Messrs. Shann, of Tadcaster, and held by the Rev. John Butler Mitchell M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge, who resides at Scotton. The Queen is lady of the manor; Mr. Shann is the principal landowner. The soil is gravelly; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The parish consists of the townships of Farnham, Scotton, part of Ferkensby and part of Arkehdale. The township of Farnham contains 939 and the parish 2,534 acres of land; in 1871 the population of the township of Farnham was 146; of the parish, 597; rateable value of the township, £1,612.
