Historical Description

FEATHERSTONE (with the townships of Aketon, Purston Jaglin, and Loscoe Grange) is a pleasant village, township and parish, and has a station on the Wakefield, Pontefract and Goole branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, about 2 miles west from Pontefract, and 7 east from Wakefield, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of Osgoldcross wapentake, Pontefract union and county court district, Upper Osgoldcross petty sessional division, rural deanery of Pontefract, and York archdeaconry and diocese. The township is governed by a Local Board of nine members. The church of All saints is an ancient stone building, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and tower with 3 bells, the earliest of which dates from pre-Reformation times, and bears the inscription “In multis annis resonet: Campana Johannis”; two other bells have been added, inscribed respectively to St. Peter and St. James: there are monuments to the Fairfax family (1657), to Sir E. M. Winn (1833), and Arthur Heywood of Aketon Hall (1863): the font, which is supposed to have been brought from Pontefract in the time of the Civil Wars, bears a curious inscription and bears the name and coat of John de Baghill; Langdale Sunderland esq. of Aketon Hall, who raised an army in support of King Charles I. and was fined by Cromwell, is interred in this church. The register dates from the year 1558 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £250, with residence and 41 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Christ Church, Oxford, and held by the Rev. Benj. Hinde M.A. of Christ Church. There is a Sunday school held in the National schoolroom. Here is a Wesleyan chapel erected in 1844. The Primitive Methodists have a handsome chapel of red brick at south Featherstone, erected in 1872. There are almshouses for three poor women. Mary Carter’s charity is £244, interest for blankets and fuel. Here is a small cemetery. Featherstone Hall, a fine stone structure, the property of G. Bradley esq. is at present unoccupied. The Manor house, also the property of George Bradley esq. and unoccupied, was formerly the residence of the Hippon family, who were the hereditary keepers of the game in Pontefract Park until Queen Elizabeth’s reign. Old Featherstone Hall, also the property of G. Bradley esq. is at present unoccupied. George Bradley esq. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is clay and ligth loam; subsoil, chiefly clay. Here are several coal pits adjacent to Aketon and Featherstone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, turnips and potatoes. The area of the township is 1,380 acres and of the parish 4,451 acres; rateable value of the township £12,093; and the population in 1861 of the former was 353; 1871, 1,222, and of the latter 2,406; 1871,5,136.
