Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

FELIXKIRK is a parish, township and village in a pleasant position on the side of the Hambleton hills, 4 ½ miles north-east from Thirsk station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, and 13 north from Easingwold, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Thirsk union and county court district, wapentake and petty sessional division of Birdforth, rural deanery of Thirsk, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Felix is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells and a turret clock erected in 1898 at a cost of over £100, by F. E. Walker esq. in memory of his wife; there are several memorial windows to the Johnstone and Walker families and a brass to the Rev. Canon Charles Johnstone M.A. vicar here 1827—72, who died in 1882: in 1912 a reading desk and carved oak choir seats were provided in memory of the late Rev. Henry Clayforth, vicar from 1873 to 1909. The church was restored about 1860 and affords 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1598. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £500, including 97 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1909 by the Rev. William Robert Hannam M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. The appropriate tithe, amounting to £151, is assigned to the Archbishop of York. Mount St. John, the seat of Arthur John Walker esq. J.P. Stands on a commanding eminence, surrounded by fine groves of trees: the site was formerly occupied by a commandery of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, from whom the name of the place is derived. The principal landowners are Arthur John Walker esq. the Archbishop of York, who is lord of the manor, and the vicar. The soil is loamy clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are oats, barley and wheat. Area, 1,192 acres; rateable value, £1,224; the population in 1911 was 91 in the township, and in the ecclesiastical parish 690.
