Historical Description

FELKIRK is a parish comprising the townships of south Hiendley, Brierley, Shafton and Havercroft and the hamlets of Grimethorpe and Cold Hiendley. Felkirk consists of one farm-house and the church, and is 8 miles south-east from Wakefield, 8 southwest from Pontefract, 6 north-east from Barnsley and 3 from the Cudworth station on the Midland railway: it is in the southern division of the Riding, wapentake of stain-cross, Hemsworth union, Barnsley county court district, Pontefract rural deanery, York archdeaconry and diocese. The church of St. Peter is an old stone building in the Perpendicular style, with two Norman pillars and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and square tower with 6 bells, the last three of which were given by Thomas Dymond esq. when the church was restored in 1876. The register dates from 1701. The living is a vicarage, yearly value about £350 with residence and a small portion of glebe, in the gift of the Archbishop of York and held by the Rev. John Henry Littlewood, of St. Bees. There is a chapel for Wesleyan Methodists. The charities for the parish are £18 yearly. Hodroyd, in south Hiendley, a seat of Viscount Galway, but now occupied by Richard Day esq. is an old substantial stone building, very commodious and commanding a fine view of the surrounding country. Francis John Savile Foljambe esq. M.P. who is lord of the manor of Hodroyd within the manors of Havercroft and Brierley, and Viscount Galway M.P. are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and potatoes. The area is 6,069 acres; rateable value, £11,962 18s. 6 ½d.; and the population in 1871, 1,109.
