Historical Description

FEWSTON is a parish, township and village and a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, 7 miles north from Otley, 14 from Skipton and 12 from Knaresborough, in the Claro wapentake, liberty of Knaresborough, county court district and petty sessional division of Otley, union of Wharfedale, rural deanery of Otley, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, situated on the north bank of the river Washburn. The church of St. Lawrence, standing upon an eminence, is a stone building in a late Jacobean style of architecture, dating from about 1629, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, with square embattled tower containing 4 bells, all of modern date: the font is Perpendicular and is much defaced: previous to the date of the building of this church (1629) the edifice which stood upon the same site was destroyed by fire; the old registers, dating from 1508, were saved: the earliest date of the register, a parchment volume, is 1508, but it is in a very dilapidated condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £386, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor and held by the Rev. John Marks Ashley LL.B. of Caius College, Cambridge. The Wesleyans have a chapel here with a numerous congregation. The Leeds Corporation Waterworks have 2 reservoirs here 300 acres in extent, which are supplied by the river Washburn. Great fear is at present entertained that the Vicarage, Church and Grave Yard may subside, on account of the water percolating through the soil; there are already perceptible cracks in the walls of the Vicarage and Church, and the hill upon which they stand is in many places honeycombed and cracked to a depth of several feet. The Duke of Devonshire is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the vicar, Mr. Matthew Gill, the Leeds Corporation and George and Charles Shann esqrs.; there are also a number of smaller owners. The soil is clayey; the subsoil, millstone grit. The land is chiefly in pasture. The population of the township (1871) 399, and the area is 2,186 acres; the population of the parish is 1,453, and the area is 17,644 acres; rateable value, £2,809.

Brass Castle, 2 ½ miles, and Bland Hill, 3 miles, are places in this township.

Board school (H. Pennington, clerk to the Board); Henry Bottomley, master.
